🎨 Acrylic Paint: How to Clean It Effectively? (Brushes, Clothes, Furniture…)

Acrylic paint is one of the most popular types of paint, among both hobbyists and professional artists. It’s easy to use, mix, and dries quickly, but it has one major drawback: it stains—and quickly! So a question often comes up: How do you clean acrylic paint? Does it come out of clothes?

Spoiler: Yes, but not always… 😅

In this article, we’ll review all the methods for removing acrylic paint depending on the surface—fabric, paintbrushes, furniture, skin, and more—and how to prevent damage in the future.

🧼 1. Acrylic paint: a water-based paint… but not as harmless as you might think

Let’s start with a quick technical refresher.

Acrylic paint is a water-based paint, but it is enriched with acrylic resins that become durable once dry. While it is still wet, it can be cleaned off fairly easily with water. But once dry, it becomes as durable as plastic.

It’s kind of like gum that’s fallen on a sweater: the longer you wait, the harder it is to get off.

👕 2. Does acrylic paint come off clothes?

✔️ Yes, if it’s still fresh

As soon as a drop lands on your favorite T-shirt or pair of jeans, head straight to the sink. A little lukewarm water, some Marseille soap (or dish soap), a good scrub… and presto, it’s 100% gone.

🧠 Tip: Turn the garment inside out and rub the inside to “push” the stain outward.

❌ No, if it’s dry (or almost dry)

That’s a different story. A dried acrylic paint stain on fabric is very stubborn because the pigments become embedded in the fibers. You’ll need to use more aggressive methods:

🧪 Ways to remove dried acrylic paint from fabric:

ProductMethodEffectiveness
70° or 90° alcoholDab the stain with a clothGood 👍
Acetone (nail polish remover)Gently dab; test on an inconspicuous area firstAverage ⚠️
White vinegar + baking sodaApply, let it sit, then scrub with a brushAverage
Textile stripper (available at hardware stores)Product intended for topical useVery good 💪

⚠️ Be sure to always test a small area first before applying solvents: some fabrics may fade or be damaged.

🖌️ 3. Clean brushes and tools after using acrylic paint

Never let paint dry on your brushes—otherwise, they’re bound to end up in the trash!

➤ Brushes that have just been used:

  1. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  2. Scrub with soap (such as black soap or Marseille soap).
  3. Rinse and let air-dry with the fur facing down.

➤ If the paint has dried:

  • Soak the brush in rubbing alcohol or brake fluid for a few hours.
  • Gently comb through with a brush comb.
  • Reapply a small amount of vegetable oil or flaxseed oil.

🚫 White spirit is useless with acrylic paint; it’s only useful for oil paint.

🧍‍♀️ 4. Acrylic paint on the skin: Is it dangerous or not?

No, it’s not dangerous, but it’s not great to leave it on for too long either.

To remove acrylic paint from your skin:

  • Use warm water and soap.
  • For tougher stains: vegetable oil + a soft cloth.

Avoid using harsh solvents on your skin (acetone, pure alcohol, etc.), especially on children.

🪑 5. Removing acrylic paint from furniture or the floor

➤ On varnished wood:

  • Use a damp microfiber cloth and gently scrape with a plastic spatula.
  • If needed: warm white vinegar or household alcohol.

➤ On untreated wood:

  • Paint can penetrate deeply. Try this:
    • Baking soda + hot water
    • Light sanding if the stain is old

➤ On tile:

  • A razor blade or window scraper + hot water = often effective.

🧽 6. Precautions to Prevent Disasters

Better to be safe than to scrub for two hours… 😅

Simple tips to prevent damage:

  • Wear “painting” clothes (yes, even old pajamas will do).
  • Cover the table with plastic or an old tablecloth.
  • Wear a lab coat or a long apron if you’re clumsy.
  • Always keep a paper towel and a damp cloth within reach.

🌱 7. Are there any acrylic paints that are easier to clean up?

Some brands offer paints that can be washed off with water even after they’ve dried, especially those designed for children. But be careful: they often provide less coverage, are less durable, and are more expensive.

If you’re painting indoors or with children, it might be worth considering these alternatives.

🧠 Summary: What should you do depending on the situation?

SupportFreshDry
ClothingWarm water + soapAlcohol / acetone / paint stripper
PaintbrushesWater + soapAlcohol or a specific product
Wooden FurnitureCloth + waterVinegar / sanding / paint stripper
TileSponge + waterScraper / vinegar
SkinWater + soapOil + soft cloth

🔄 Bonus: What should you do if the stain really won’t come out?

Turn your stained garment into an official artist’s apron, add some more stains on purpose, and turn it into a wearable work of art 😎🎨. Or recycle the fabric to protect your surfaces in the future!

💡 In conclusion

Acrylic paint is a wonderful creative tool, but it can also be… a stubborn little stain. The secret to cleaning it effectively isto act quickly, before it dries. But even once it’s set in, all is not lost: there are several effective techniques for each type of surface.

And to paint with peace of mind, don’t forget the basics: protect, plan ahead, and clean up as soon as possible.
