There’s a simple technique you can use to give a painting a more material effect<\/strong>: modeling paste<\/strong>. By the end of this page, you’ll know exactly how to use modeling paste<\/strong> to add relief and texture to your painting<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Modeling paste: create textured backgrounds<\/h2>\n\n

Modeling paste means “modelling paste”, but the paste used in painting to give relief to a painting remains quite flexible. All the pasta on the market is ready-to-use, and there’s a wide variety to choose from.<\/p>\n\n

Like a kind of mortar, it’s adherent: add various objects, metals, fabrics, small subjects that will integrate into the paste and solidify in it as it dries.<\/p>\n\n

Using a modeling paste <\/strong>base gives a painting a superb rendering, adding depth and movement.<\/p>\n\n

All pasta is white, but there are two ways to add color:<\/p>\n\n

  • mix coloured acrylic paint directly with the modeling paste on the canvas;<\/li>

    The choice of paste is quite personal, and depends on your facility for creating impasto. From fairly liquid and light to creamier and heavier, test the one that gives you the greatest satisfaction. I’ve chosen two brands that offer quality products and enable you to create 3D-style effects, with different renderings. It’s vital that this relief base doesn’t crack as it dries, and retains all the volume you’ve created, without losing your knife’s unique fingerprints.<\/p>\n\n

    • The classic: Studio Acrylics Auxiliaries<\/li><\/ul>\n\n

      It is a relief paste reminiscent of the texture of gesso. It is not very consistent, but can be used to work small, superficial shapes.<\/p>\n\n

      It’s the ideal product for creating <\/strong>\n alla prima<\/em>\n<\/strong>It mixes perfectly with acrylic paint. Its rather fluid consistency means that it cannot be applied to large volumes, nor can it be used to create cavities: it is impossible to obtain the real thickness needed for precision work.<\/p>\n\n

      Denser than gesso, its liquid composition allows you to sculpt small effects with the tip of a knife, engrave writing as you apply it, and adhere objects if the layer is thick enough.<\/p>\n\n

      Once dry, the result is a little disappointing, although the patterns are still present. The paste settles as it dries, loses opacity and its fluidity is absorbed by the substrate.<\/p>\n\n
