{"id":12061,"date":"2017-08-23T13:22:03","date_gmt":"2017-08-23T11:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/painting-on-wood\/"},"modified":"2017-08-23T13:22:03","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T11:22:03","slug":"painting-on-wood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/en\/painting-on-wood\/","title":{"rendered":"Painting on wood!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZtdT7FG2m8I?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Abstract painting on canvas is not an end in itself!<\/p>\n<p>In fact, there are other supports, and I&#8217;d like to talk to you about one in particular:<strong> the wooden support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Acrylic paint on wood!<\/h2>\n<p>A few years ago, I was working on an <strong>abstract painting project<\/strong> and needed a <strong>very rigid support<\/strong>. This was an obligation for me, as I wanted to experiment with special techniques based on rubbing and tapping.<\/p>\n<p>So I tried to go for heavier-weight canvases to achieve a certain robustness. But I wasn&#8217;t convinced by the idea for long.<\/p>\n<p>Then I suddenly shouted: &#8220;<em>Of course! Wood!!!<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Wood was indeed a good choice! Initially, I decided to make my own stand.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about painting on a simple board. It was easy to find and all I had to do was sand it properly to get a nice surface. The problem was the edges, the weight and not knowing how well my wood would react and age with the acrylic paint.<\/p>\n<p>So I simply decided to <strong>go back to wood supports<\/strong>, which are offered by some suppliers of fine art materials.<\/p>\n<h2>The wood panel \/ wood support<\/h2>\n<p>I could quickly see that the wood panel suppliers had turned the various problems outlined above on their head. A surface on which I can rub, scratch, stamp, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the advantages and disadvantages I&#8217;ve seen in my own use:<\/p>\n<h3>Advantages :<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Heavy-duty stand<\/li>\n<li>Quality rendering<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s no grain like on a cotton or linen canvas.<\/li>\n<li>The rigidity of wood makes the creation of your abstract painting a unique experience; contact with wood is really something to try.<\/li>\n<li>If you work the material, you won&#8217;t have sagging like with canvas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Disadvantages :<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Heavier support than most canvas frames<\/li>\n<li>Higher costs than the average for canvas-covered frames<\/li>\n<li>Corners are quickly &#8220;marked&#8221; following a fall or a blow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Preparing the wood substrate<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike canvas, you need to<strong>apply a good coat of Gesso<\/strong> to remove some of the wood&#8217;s roughness. But also so that your paint is not absorbed by the substrate.<\/p>\n<h2>The varnish I use<\/h2>\n<p>In my case, I use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/faut-il-vernir-ses-tableaux\/\">liquid varnish for acrylic paint<\/a>, not a spray varnish. (Click on the link to find out more about varnishes)<\/p>\n<h2>My opinion<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to work on your paintings with a lot of material, or if you need to rub, tap or press on your support, then the wooden support is for you! I highly recommend you try it at least once.
