{"id":12075,"date":"2017-04-18T17:45:08","date_gmt":"2017-04-18T15:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/gesso-or-how-to-prepare-a-substrate-create-textures\/"},"modified":"2017-04-18T17:45:08","modified_gmt":"2017-04-18T15:45:08","slug":"gesso-or-how-to-prepare-a-substrate-create-textures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/en\/gesso-or-how-to-prepare-a-substrate-create-textures\/","title":{"rendered":"Gesso or how to prepare a substrate &amp; create textures."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uuosIjEm2tY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gesso: What it is and how to use it<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Gesso<\/strong> originated in Italy in the Middle Ages as a simple means of preparing wooden surfaces for painting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Gesso is made differently, but its purpose hasn&#8217;t really changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, with Gesso you <strong>can prime your canvases<\/strong>, making them <strong>smoother<\/strong> and <strong>reducing paint absorption<\/strong> (a cotton canvas can absorb a certain amount of paint).  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Used on canvas, Gesso also has a major advantage:<strong> it masks the weft effects of the fabric<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be used to create<strong> an undercoat<\/strong> for your various substrates:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wood<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canvas frames<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thick paper<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardboard<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gesso can also be used for <strong>creative effects<\/strong> such as <strong>creating textures with a painting knife<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to use Gesso<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brush \/ spalter<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the classic and most common use. All you need to do is <strong>take some Gesso directly from the jar and apply it to your canvas<\/strong> (in a criss-cross pattern, for example).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recommend you <strong>apply at least two coats of Gesso<\/strong> to achieve a beautiful result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gesso is applied in several stages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 1:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Apply a first coat<\/strong> with a small amount of gesso. Take the time to cover everything thoroughly.
