An easel is a tripod-like support that holds your painting while you create it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, you need to differentiate between <\/span><b>a workshop easel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>an exhibition easel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (To find out more about the difference, please go to  <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/guide-cours-pdf\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">download the painting equipment guide<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The easel is practical<\/strong> in the sense that you can work seated in front of your canvas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The easel allows you to position your canvas at an angle averaging between 45\u00b0 and 90\u00b0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To use it, simply place the three feet on the ground, then present and secure your canvas on the base provided.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The advantages of the easel<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Space-saving and easy to store<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use it in small spaces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its mobility makes it easy to catch the light<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take it with you when you travel<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can sit down in front of your board and work comfortably.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take a step back from your painting by stepping away<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disadvantages of the easel<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not made for working on large formats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You cannot work on polyptychs (a polyptych is a painting composed of several canvases).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working flat<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1185 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/hanjel_561186.jpg\" alt=\"flat painting\" width=\"322\" height=\"293\">It was Jackson Pollock who at the time, out of need, clearly announced that easels were obsolete and would soon disappear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working flat simply means working on a table, workbench or floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s my favorite way of working and allows me to meet all my needs and wildest ideas!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/inscription-a-la-liste-vip\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I talk about how to set up a workshop and its workbench in my forthcoming PDF book currently being written, to find out more go here<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> )<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits <\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can easily work on polyptychs and large canvases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You usually work standing up, so you can be dynamic and move efficiently around the board.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can work with liquids and freeze more or less liquid textures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disadvantages<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re on your feet, you may experience muscular strain and tire more quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the workbench is too low, you run the risk of arching your back too much and suffering back pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s difficult to stand back from your painting (My solution: Use a ladder-type stepladder to gain height and look at your painting).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nWorking on the wall<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is another technique used by contemporary artists working on very large formats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim is to work at 90\u00b0 by simply placing your canvas on the wall. You work standing in front of your canvas and can easily move around on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits  <\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can easily move from one corner of the canvas to another.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can easily stand back from your painting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use some nice drip effects, but this still requires a certain amount of experience, anticipation and dexterity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disadvantages<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It requires space<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to have plenty of nails and fasteners on your wall to accommodate as many formats as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;re clearly going to cover your wall with paint!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1186 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/jonas-painting.jpg\" alt=\"jonas paint against wall\" width=\"464\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/jonas-painting.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/jonas-painting-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/jonas-painting-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To conclude<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My favorite method is flat work, which is the most versatile way of working for me. This suits me because I&#8217;m a painter specializing in abstract painting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for those who practice figurative painting, the easel is more common and often the most appropriate.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>What about you?
