Ouch&#8230; I think then that like many contemporary painters, you may be a perfectionist!<\/p>\n<h2>What is perfectionism?<\/h2>\n<p>Perfectionism refers to a person&#8217;s habit of systematically striving for perfection.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-964\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/citation-0.jpg\" alt=\"salvador dali's quote on perfection\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/citation-0.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/citation-0-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/citation-0-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/citation-0-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/citation-0-750x750.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The evils of perfectionism<\/h2>\n<p>Perfectionism can be harmful, because it will tire you out trying to achieve a goal that ultimately doesn&#8217;t exist.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s anxiety-provoking, puts you under pressure, stresses you out <strong>and, above all, wastes a lot of your time!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Perfectionism among contemporary painters<\/h2>\n<p>Contemporary painters, like us abstract painters, are extremely affected by perfectionism.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the practice of abstract art means that we can often work towards an undefined goal. And this can accentuate doubt and the desire to strive for a &#8220;perfect&#8221; work.<\/p>\n<h2>Perfectionism, the enemy of creativity<\/h2>\n<p>Perfectionism is a real enemy of creativity. It&#8217;s going to prevent or limit letting go, and I find that&#8217;s essential for making an abstract painting.<\/p>\n<h2>Fear of failure and procrastination?<\/h2>\n<p>Perfectionism may reflect a fear of failure. For example, you keep putting off the end of your painting, refusing to take responsibility and sign it.<\/p>\n<p>This is clearly a form of procrastination.  <em>Procrastination is the simple act of systematically putting things off until tomorrow).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>On this subject, I recommend that you consult my article<\/strong>: &#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cours-de-peinture.net\/comment-avoir-confiance-en-soi-quand-on-est-artiste-peintre\/\">How to have self-confidence when you&#8217;re a painter<\/a> &#8220;, in which I talk about imposter syndrome.<\/p>\n<h2>My tips for overcoming perfectionism as an artist<\/h2>\n<p>Get rid of your perfectionism once and for all! Here are a few tips I recommend:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Finish your paintings and never start a second one until you&#8217;ve finished the first!<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t be too hard on yourself!<\/li>\n<li>Stop believing that there&#8217;s only one solution, that everything is either black or white and that you have to aim for a single goal\/result!<\/li>\n<li>When you feel you&#8217;re going round in circles on your board: set it aside for a few hours and then come back to it. I can assure you that you&#8217;ll see your painting in a whole new light!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And I&#8217;ll end with an expression I&#8217;m particularly fond of:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8220;DONE IS BETTER THAN PERFECT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>What about you?
