The spalter: essential for starting a painting

The first brush I consider essential is the spalter, which you may also find under the names “flat brush” or “flat-headed brush.”

Personally, I use it mainly to apply the first layers—especially the background—of my paintings.

Why?

Quite simply because, at the beginning of a piece, I want to move quickly.

It’s generally not necessary to spend a lot of time working on a background that will then be largely covered by subsequent layers.

In fact, this is a mistake I see all the time: spending an enormous amount of time on the first layer while already trying to get everything just right.

With a large spalter, it’s exactly the opposite.

I can work quickly, make broad strokes, overlap my strokes, and cover a large area in just a few moments.

But there is a second reason, one that is even more important to me: movement creates energy.

When you work quickly with a large brush, your strokes are broader and more spontaneous. That energy will remain in your painting, even after you add many more layers.

That’s something I really love about my work: contrasting powerful, energetic areas with others that are much softer, airier, and calmer.

What size spalter should you choose?

Of course, that depends on the size of your medium.

I use several sizes and can use spalters as large as 100, 150, or even 200 mm when working on large formats.

The larger your canvas, the more useful it may be to use a large paintbrush.

For my backgrounds, I also like to use fairly light colors on a regular basis: beige, very light gray, azure blue…

I apply my first coat, let it dry, and then gradually continue my work.

And that’s where an important transition begins:

The more I paint, the more precise my tools become.

2. “Mop” brushes: my secret to adding softness

The second category completely changed the way I paint: mop brushes.

These are round brushes that are very flexible and very soft.

Unlike the spalter, which allows you to work with broad, powerful strokes, the mop allows you to work with much greater subtlety.

I can apply a very small amount of paint and then spread it using circular or radial motions.

For example, you can start at a single point and then gradually spread the paint out from there.

It is through this type of work that I am able to achieve some of the very soft, luminous effects you see in my paintings.

I can use them with white, cream, red, black… the color doesn’t really matter. It’s more the way the paint is applied that interests me.

And again, I’m not necessarily trying to get the result in one go.

I work layer by layer, taking my time.

Today, these brushes have become so important to my work that I would find it very difficult to do without them.

And yet, the ones I use don’t come from the world of fine arts at all…

I’ll explain that a little further down.

3. Fine brushes: the step that many beginners overlook

Finally, the third category: fine brushes.

And that’s probably the step that can be the most intimidating when you’re just starting out.

With a large brush, it’s pretty simple: you cover the surface, create movement, and work quickly.

With a small paintbrush, everything changes.

We begin working on very specific areas of the canvas.

And suddenly, the range of possibilities becomes vast.

Where should I add this little shape?

Should we darken this area?

Add a shadow?

Make this color more intense?

Create contrast?

It is precisely at this stage that we need to be willing to slow down.

Personally, I can add a small black shadow in one spot, make a shape stand out with red elsewhere, work on my values, create more depth, or balance my composition.

Then I take a step back.

I’m watching.

And I go back to work on certain areas.

Don’t finish painting too soon!

This is a point I emphasize strongly.

In abstract painting, we naturally love the spontaneous aspect: splashing paint, creating large shapes, making sweeping gestures, generating energy…

And sometimes, that’s where we stop.

You look at the painting and think to yourself:

“It’s over!”

But in reality, there may still be a great deal of work to be done.

It is often during these final stages, carried out with small brushes, that the painting truly comes into its own.

It’s the small details, the contrasts, the shadows, the tones, and all those little touches that can completely transform a work of art.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="452" src="https://www.cours-de-peinture.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/image-3-800x452.png" alt="Anthony Chambaud painting" class="wp-image-13325" (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" />

When you start working with a small brush, you might have to experiment a bit at first.

That’s normal.

But something interesting happens: one idea leads to another.

You add a small shape that makes you want to edit another one, and then add a shadow somewhere else…

Little by little, your painting takes shape.

This is an experience I highly recommend you try if you tend to give up too soon.

My rule: start big and finish small

Now you can see the logic behind these three types of brushes.

Spalter → Mop → Fine Brushes

I’ll start with some big gestures.

I create movement and energy.

Then I gradually add some sweetness.

And finally, I slow down to work on the details, the values, and the composition.

Of course, I also use other tools: painting knives and various materials, depending on the painting.

But when I look at my own practice, I almost always find these three types of brushes.

And now, let’s talk about the budget!

Because there’s absolutely no need to spend a fortune.

Where can you buy paintbrushes without breaking the bank?

Over time, I’ve come to realize one thing: you don’t necessarily have to look for your art supplies only in art supply stores.

Some paintbrushes can be found for much less in other stores.

For those using a spalter: check out your local hardware stores

Very large spalters can be expensive when sold as art supplies.

Personally, I’m going to look into equipment designed for house painters.

In particular, I use large Dexter Pro spalters that I found at Leroy Merlin.

You can find very large sizes for about 15 to 20 €, and some of mine have been in use for several years.

If you’re not in France, it doesn’t matter which store chain you go to: just check out stores that sell supplies for professional painters.

You might want to buy one to start with, try it out, and see if it fits your workflow before expanding your collection.

For the mops: head to… the makeup aisle!

Yes, you read that right.

My famous round brushes are the origin of makeup brushes.

One day, when I saw someone putting on makeup in a TV show, I looked at the brush and thought to myself:

“But that’s exactly what I’m looking for!”

These brushes are available absolutely everywhere these days, and it’s easy to find sets that include several shapes and sizes.

There’s no need to buy extremely expensive professional equipment.

Mine come mainly from Amazon, and I’ve had some of them for several years.

It just goes to show that, when it comes to painting, it can sometimes be interesting to step completely outside the realm of fine arts!

For fine brushes: I’m going back to the art supply stores

When it comes to fine brushes, however, I generally prefer traditional art supplies.

The prices are still reasonable, and above all, there’s a huge selection.

Type of bristles, bristle length, fineness of the tip, the brush’s ability to hold paint…

Depending on the desired effect, all of these characteristics can be useful.

To create a signature, for example, a brush with fairly long bristles can be particularly useful for maintaining a sense of movement.

How can you care for your paintbrushes so they’ll last for years?

Buying good paintbrushes is one thing.

Keeping them in good condition for years is another challenge!

And a few bad habits can significantly shorten their lifespan.

While I’m painting: I keep my brushes wet

When I’m doing a big painting session, I always have a container filled with water nearby.

As soon as I’m done using a paintbrush, I can temporarily soak it in water to prevent the acrylic paint from drying on it.

Be careful, though: don’t leave them in the water for several days!

They stay there during my session, and then I clean them.

Do not clean your brushes with very hot water

It’s an easy mistake to make.

One might naturally think that the hotter the water, the better it will clean the paint.

The problem lies inside the brush.

The fibers are held in place within the ferrule and secured. Excessively high temperatures can weaken this bond and, over time, lead to hair loss.

So I prefer lukewarm water to very hot water.

Don’t let your brushes dry standing upright with the bristles pointing upward

This is probably the most common habit.

Clean the brush, then put it right back into the jar, handle-side down.

I’d rather not.

After washing, water remains trapped in the bristles and can gradually seep down into the ferrule. Over time, this moisture can damage certain parts of the brush.

So, personally, I made a little setup with clips that lets me hang my brushes with the bristles pointing down after I wash them.

It’s very simple and very effective.

Do I need to buy a special product to clean my brushes?

As for me: no.

I prefer to keep things simple.

A good Marseille soap works great for cleaning my paintbrushes.

I also sometimes use shampoo when I have a lot of large brushes to clean.

There’s no need to stock up on specialized products: with regular cleaning and a few good habits, your brushes can last a very long time.

Good paintbrushes are, above all, the ones you know how to use

Ultimately, there is no magic brush that will suddenly enable you to create a good abstract painting.

What matters most is understanding the role each tool plays in your creative process.

In my case :

The spalter provides energy.

The mop makes it soft.

The fine brush provides precision and allows you to capture the finest details.

And it is precisely the contrast between these different stages that interests me.

Start big.

Give it a try.

Then gradually slow down and dare to look for the details.

Your painting could take you much further than you initially imagined.

What about you?
