Contrary to what one might think, creating an abstract work does not necessarily involve just diving into the canvas and choosing colors based solely on instinct.

Intuition obviously plays an important role in the creative process, but it can certainly be complemented by thoughtful consideration of colors, their relationships, and the contrasts they create.

In this article, I’m going to show you exactly how to create a color scheme using adjacent colors, using one of my paintings—which was created primarily with warm colors—as an example.

We’ll also look at an element that I consider essential but that is sometimes overlooked when discussing color: values.

What is an adjacent color scheme?

When creating a cohesive color palette, one of the most useful tools is the color wheel.

It’s not just a pretty circle filled with colors. It allows you to visualize their relationships and, above all, to create different harmonies that have long proven their worth.

One of these is what is known as adjacent harmony, also called analogous harmony.

The principle is very simple: you select several colors on the color wheel that are next to each other.

For example, you can work with:

yellow;

orange;

red.

These three color families follow one another naturally on the color wheel. They therefore make it possible to create a particularly cohesive palette.

That is precisely the principle I used to create this painting.

Building a Color Palette Around Warm Colors

The first thing you notice when looking at my painting is the prominent use of warm colors.

Yellow, orange, red…

I deliberately chose to stick to a relatively limited color palette.

This helps create a distinct visual identity and an overall sense of warmth.

Of course, it would have been possible to introduce a cool color to create an accent: blue, indigo, or even purple.

In fact, it’s a technique I use regularly in my paintings.

But an accent color is by no means required.

For this piece, I specifically wanted to maintain that sense of warmth throughout the entire composition. So I didn’t feel the need to use any cool colors.

What about the brunettes in all this?

If you look closely at the painting, you’ll also notice several shades of brown.

However, these colors are not directly represented on a traditional color wheel.

Why?

Because the color wheel generally displays colors at relatively high levels of saturation.

Simply put, a saturated color is a particularly intense and vibrant color.

Conversely, when you start to desaturate it, it gradually becomes duller or more grayish.

You can also adjust its brightness and make it darker.

That is exactly what allows me to achieve some of the browns in my painting.

They are still based on my original color palette—red, orange, yellow—but are much darker shades.

Of course, you can use colors such as natural umber, sienna, or various shades of cream directly.

But you can also create these shades yourself by mixing colors.

And that’s where painting gets really interesting!

Darkening a color without simply adding black

When I want to darken a color, my first instinct isn’t necessarily to add black to it.

A much more interesting method is to use its complementary color.

<figure class="wp-block-image href="https://www.cours-de-peinture.net/en/coloring-3-techniques-acrylic-paint-tutorial/">COLORING: 3 TECHNIQUES (Acrylic paint / Tutorial)

When used in the right amount, it helps to tone down and deepen a color while preserving an interesting richness of hue.

This is how you can achieve certain browns that are much more subtle than those obtained with a simple mixture containing black.

But choosing colors is only part of the job.

There is one more extremely important element needed to give the painting its power.

The secret: Don’t just think in terms of colors—think in terms of values.

Two paintings that use exactly the same colors can produce completely different results.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="450" src="https://www.cours-de-peinture.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/2-800x450.jpg" 800px) 100vw, 800px" />

Why?

Because their values may differ.

Simply put, value refers to the brightness level of a color.

Imagine that your painting were transformed into black and white.

Some colors will appear very light, while others will become much darker.

For example, a very bright yellow will generally be much closer to white than a deep red or a dark brown.

It is this difference that we must learn to observe.

From White to Black

In my painting, I deliberately sought to use a fairly wide range of values.

There are very light shades—sometimes almost white or cream—followed by various intermediate shades, all the way down to extremely dark shades.

I even used real Mars black for some of the projections.

The goal is not to replace colors with black and white.

These neutral tones actually serve to accentuate the extremes of the value scale.

This results in greater contrast.

And it is precisely this contrast that can lend tremendous power to a composition.

Here’s a very simple tip: look at your painting in black and white

When you’re just starting out, it’s not always easy to think about colors and values at the same time.

Fortunately, there’s a very simple trick.

Take a photo of your painting and temporarily convert it to black and white.

The colors are fading.

You can then observe only the differences in brightness.

Ask yourself a few questions:

Does my painting have any truly light areas?

Are some areas actually dark?

Are there enough intermediate values?

Does my image look completely uniform?

As you gain experience, you’ll find you need this tip less and less. Your eye will gradually learn to estimate the value of a color right away when you look at it.

Why does contrast make a painting more interesting?

In this work, the combination of bright yellows, oranges, reds, very dark browns, and a few blacks creates striking contrasts.

Added to this are the brushstrokes, the drips, the various layers, and much softer areas.

The eye then has a vast amount of information to process.

It is this interplay between energy, contrast, and softness that particularly interests me in my work.

A coherent color scheme does not, therefore, mean that everything has to be uniform.

On the contrary.

You can stick to a relatively limited color palette while still creating a great deal of variety through value, saturation, textures, and brushwork.

Add energy through projections

The creation of this painting also involves working in layers.

I started by working on the background with a spalter to create movement and energy.

I then used various water-based effects, such as drips, glazes, and multiple layers.

At a certain point, I could very well have considered the painting finished.

But something was missing.

I wanted more energy.

So I decided to add these large, round shapes that you can see in the artwork.

It’s a process that sometimes takes only a few seconds, yet can completely transform a painting.

Of course, that can also be scary!

Poorly controlled lighting can radically alter a composition that had been working very well up to that point.

So you have to gradually learn to control your brushstrokes and, above all, know what you want to bring to the painting.

Intuition and reflection are not mutually exclusive

That’s probably the main point I’d like you to take away from this.

Creating intuitively does not mean creating without thinking.

In my own work, I leave plenty of room for intuition. I follow my instincts, experiment, add brushstrokes, and sometimes let the paint create its own effects.

But at the same time, I’d like to offer some thoughts.

And this thought process very often begins with my choice of colors.

Before you start your next abstract painting, try taking a few minutes to look at your color wheel.

Choose a color scheme.

Ask yourself what kind of atmosphere you want to create.

Only then should you let your intuition take over.

It’s up to you to give it a try!

For your next painting, try, for example, selecting only three adjacent colors on your color wheel.

You could choose:

yellow → orange → red

or, on a completely different note:

blue → blue-green → green

Next, experiment with different saturations and different values for these colors.

Add very light shades.

Create darker shades.

Then take a look at your black-and-white painting.

You’ll quickly find that with just a few color families, it’s possible to create an extremely rich palette.

So the color wheel isn’t meant to limit your creativity.

On the contrary: it provides you with a framework within which you can experiment freely.

And it’s often when reflection and intuition begin to work together that things get really interesting in abstract painting.

In abstract painting, the choice of colors is far from trivial.
