<strong>painting with bubbles!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, real bubbles.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With just acrylic paint, water, a little dish soap, and a straw, you can create organic patterns made up of circles, translucent effects, and layers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a particularly interesting technique in <strong>abstract painting<\/strong> because it introduces an element of chance while still leaving plenty of room to refine the result later.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most importantly: <strong>you don&#8217;t need to be experienced with acrylic paint to give it a try.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s take a look at how to do this.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why use acrylic paint bubbles?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I like about this kind of technique is that it helps you overcome the infamous fear of the blank page very quickly.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of immediately trying to create a perfect composition, we&#8217;re going to come up with an initial result.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"475\" never have drawn on purpose.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, we have several options:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>create a composition using only speech bubbles;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>layer multiple colors;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use the result as <strong>the background for an abstract painting<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>apply glazes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>draw over it;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>create shadows;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>add projections;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to outline certain shapes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then work with Posca-type markers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it&#8217;s much more than just a little bit of fun.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This technique can serve as the <strong>starting point for a true abstract painting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The necessary equipment<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good news: You probably already have almost everything you need at home.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"491\" 1034w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will need:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>acrylic paint;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>water;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dish soap or liquid soap;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a small container, preferably made of glass;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a brush or a small stick for stirring;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a straw or a small tube for blowing;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>thick paper, Canson paper, or a small piece of canvas-backed cardboard;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>old clothes or an apron.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To start with, I also recommend choosing <strong>a relatively dark color<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultramarine blue works particularly well.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also experiment with black, purple, sienna, or another shade that&#8217;s dark enough.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because dark colors make it easier to see the variations in opacity and the different levels of transparency left by the bubbles.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with just one color, you can already achieve a wide variety of shades.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you make the mixture for blowing bubbles?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is probably the most important part of this technique.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There isn&#8217;t necessarily a one-size-fits-all recipe that&#8217;s precise down to the milliliter: <strong>you&#8217;ll have to experiment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start by putting a small amount of acrylic paint into your container.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, add dish soap. For my first few attempts, I use less dish soap than paint\u2014about half as much. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mix.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then gradually add a little water.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to create a mixture that is liquid enough to easily produce bubbles, but contains enough paint so that the bubbles leave a visible mark when they burst on the surface.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s exactly where it all comes down to.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Too much water<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your mixture contains too much water, the marks left by the bubbles may be very faint and not very distinct.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This might be a good option if you&#8217;re looking for a lot of transparency, but you&#8217;ll have less contrast.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not enough water<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversely, if the mixture is too thick, it becomes difficult to produce enough bubbles.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not enough dish soap<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll also have a harder time creating a thick foam.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the idea is to gradually find <strong>the right balance between paint, water, and dish soap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t make a huge batch the first time you try it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use small amounts and adjust your mixture gradually.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you paint with bubbles?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once your mixture is ready, grab your straw or small tube.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place it in the container and <strong>blow<\/strong> to create bubbles.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, be careful not to vacuum it up!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"456\" 1003w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the bubbles extend far enough beyond the edge of the container, take your sheet of paper and place it very gently on top of them.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t necessarily try to pop all the bubbles right away.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply place the paper on top, apply very light pressure, and then wait.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some bubbles will burst immediately.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img 1187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others will stay on the paper for a few seconds before bursting.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes it is the latter that yield the most interesting results.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll see circles appear that are larger or smaller, more or less opaque, and with more or less paint on them.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"235\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move the sheet slightly and try again.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you know it, your surface will start to fill up with patterns.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leave some room for chance<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is probably the most important tip in this exercise.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image bubbles will burst.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some will burst too soon.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you&#8217;ll apply too much paint in one spot.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A big bubble might create a trail that&#8217;s completely different from what you imagined.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s no big deal.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"190\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are, in fact, in the process of experimenting.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I experiment with this kind of technique, I prefer to do several small test pieces rather than trying to get a perfect result on a canvas right away.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, cut the paper into four, five, or ten pieces.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give it a try.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adjust the amount of water slightly.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add more paint.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try blowing big bubbles, then small ones.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let it dry.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can then take your time looking at the results you like best.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Playing with Color Transparency<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most interesting aspects of this technique is <strong>transparency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bubbles do not necessarily leave a uniform layer of paint.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This naturally results in variations in intensity.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when multiple prints overlap, new effects appear.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly interesting in abstract painting.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can start with ultramarine blue, let it dry, and then start over with another color.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some areas will overlap, creating some very interesting <strong>optical effects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach is quite similar to that used in washes and glazes: the layers are applied on top of one another without necessarily completely covering what lies beneath.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can you pop the bubbles faster?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally, I recommend letting the bubbles pop on their own.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you want to speed up the process a little, you can use a little heat.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"237\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a hair dryer;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or, alternatively, a heat gun used with extreme caution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both cases, keep your distance and use very little heat.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is definitely not to heat the paint or the surface excessively, but simply to help the bubbles burst.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally, though, I think it&#8217;s a good idea to give them a little time.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chance is part of the experience.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turning these bubbles into a true abstract painting<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once your surface is dry, the real work can begin.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s when this technique becomes much more interesting than just a fun exercise.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at your sheet of paper.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain shapes will immediately catch your eye.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can then make changes to it.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"277\" add:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a black outline;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>solid white areas;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>projections;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>transparent glazes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>features;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shadows;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>new textures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also cut out certain parts of your experiments and incorporate them into a composition.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let yourself be guided by what chance has given you.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are no longer looking at a blank page.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You already have some visual material to respond to.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s exactly why I like to experiment with this kind of technique: <strong>it makes it easier to take the leap into the creative process.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can this technique be used on a large canvas?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the method needs to be adjusted slightly.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using a small piece of paper, you can easily create a few bubbles in a glass or small container and then place your sheet of paper on top of them.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a large canvas, it would obviously be much more complicated.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One solution, then, is to use <strong>a wider container<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prepare your mixture in this container, create enough foam to cover the surface with bubbles, and then apply certain sections of your canvas directly onto it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This way, you can apply the same principle on a much larger scale.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I really recommend that you don&#8217;t start right away on your beautiful canvas!<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start small before moving on to the whiteboard<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know that when we discover a new technique, we immediately want to try it out on a piece of art.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But start by experimenting.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a few pieces of paper.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try different concentrations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch how the bubbles react.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check the result after it has dried.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, try a second color.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only once you begin to understand how your mixture works should you consider moving on to a larger scale.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This trial phase will save you a lot of frustration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In abstract painting, <strong>experimentation is an integral part of the creative process<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not necessarily about whether you succeed or fail at something.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above all, it\u2019s about discovering what a technique produces and thinking about how we can then make it our own.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An ideal technique for boosting creativity<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This acrylic painting technique using bubbles is extremely simple.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet, it offers a wealth of possibilities.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s precisely this contrast that I like.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using just a few very basic products, we can create complex shapes, transparencies, and layers that would have been very difficult to reproduce intentionally with a brush.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above all, the bubbles give us <strong>a
