How to paint the edges of your painting easily and effectively

Hello everyone!

Do you want to paint the edges of your painting but don’t know how to go about it? Afraid you’ll spill over onto your beautiful artwork and spoil it?

Never fear! I’d like to introduce you to a technique that will enable you to paint all the edges of your paintings VERY easily, and without the slightest risk!

What I use to paint the edges of my paintings

The foam brush

The foam brush makes it easy to apply paint to the edges of your canvas. As it is rigid, it will enable you to apply your paint easily without the risk of spillage.

The roller

Rolling is my favorite technique and I use it 90% of the time. I’m going to use the roller to show you my technique.

I’ll show you how to paint the edges of your painting with a roller.

As for the choice of color to use, it’s up to you. Personally, I paint most of my edges black. But there’s nothing to stop you using the color of your choice, such as the same color as your composition.

Step 1: Use your roller with paint and a little water

Take your roller and use your paint diluted with a little water.

Step 2: Applying the first coat

Keep the same angle and apply the paint to all your edges. Take care to lock in position.

Step 3: Don’t forget the folds

You’ll soon realize that the folds in the top and bottom corners of your canvas are more complicated to paint. To remedy this, lightly tap them with your roller.

Step 4: Apply a second coat!

Yes, I know… you don’t necessarily want to wait for a second coat to dry, but it’s the second coat that makes all the difference! In fact, this is what will give you a clean rendering of your painting. Don’t neglect this second layer.

Please note the following points:

  • Apply two coats of paint
  • Don’t forget to add a little water to your paint (but not too much!).
  • Opt for a smooth, force-free movement, but maintain the same angle of application
  • In the event of a spill on the canvas, use water and a clean handkerchief or cloth as quickly as possible.
  • Don’t overlook canvas folds
  • Do not pick up the painting by the edges once the paint has been applied.
