Be creative!
Being creative is absolutely essential for a painter specializing in abstract painting. In fact, to stop copying existing paintings, to stop doing the same thing over and over again and find your own style, you need to be constantly creative.
Creativity is not a gift!
You often say to me: “You’re lucky, you’re creative, you have a gift”.
Creativity is not a gift! Creativity is a skill that can be acquired and learned.
Some, indeed, have aptitudes, are sometimes creative, and will tell you that they have absolutely not learned to be so. What they don’t know is that they may have developed this faculty unconsciously and that it has nothing to do with a so-called “gift”.
Here are 4 techniques to help you develop your creativity
There are thousands of techniques for developing creativity. To get you started smoothly and efficiently, here are 4 simple ways to boost your creativity.
A good environment
Make sure you’re in a safe, non-disruptive, non-anxious environment. An environment where you feel at ease and where nothing can disturb you.
To develop your creativity in a breast environment, I recommend :
- Put aside your phone, e-mail, notifications, etc.
- Don’t leave things in the room that could distract your attention (TV, mail, etc.).
- Not to leave objects or mementos that could cause anxiety or sadness
The aim of the process is to let you get on with your creative ideas without being disturbed. This notion is closely linked to letting go, which I discuss in my book“Se lancer dans la peinture abstraite“.
Going for a walk
It’s as easy as pie, yet so effective! Take some time for yourself and go for a walk without thinking about everyday worries.
The benefits of the ride:
- This considerably relaxes
- It takes the stress away
- Walking helps you sleep better
- And in our case, going for a walk is a superb source of creativity.
- Beautiful! Look around you!
So why does walking help you find creativity?
Being in a serene, stress-free state and enjoying a beautiful view will inspire you and consequently develop your creativity.
The sketchbook
Using a sketchbook will help you to let go.
You don’t need to know how to draw, just have fun scribbling things in a notebook, wherever and whenever you like.
You’ll quickly find yourself captivated and in a kind of bubble.
The 30-circle test
I love the 30-circle test! It’s a fun and highly effective way to develop your creativity.
Take a blank sheet of paper and fill it with 30 circles of the same size.
Give yourself 2 minutes to fill in as many circles as you can, drawing whatever you like inside. The aim is to use the circle as a drawing base.
This test/exercise is great fun, you have a good time and you’re usually very surprised by the results!
You’ll find that the pressure of time (2 minutes) and the desire to fill in as many circles as possible will create a considerable let-go.
Doesn’t it remind you of something? This is exactly how speed-painting works.

I’ve outlined a few simple techniques to help you get creative, but there are many more. What about you? How do you get creative? What are your techniques? Please share your comments with us at the bottom of the page.
