We can’t always be all fire and brimstone in our activities and hobbies. Painting is a special field that requires imagination and letting go. At times, you’ll have a flurry of ideas: you’ll paint with enthusiasm and motivation! At other times, we lack inspiration and are ready to call it a day… So how do we (re)find our passion and inspiration?
Getting started with acrylic paint
You’ve decided to take up acrylic painting. It’s an excellent idea, because painting is a liberating activity that allows you toexpress your emotions. It’s not surprising that it’s a medium used, for example, as “art therapy” to help people externalize their feelings through painting.
For some, painting is as if it were innate. “You have a gift!” Yes, indeed, I can’t explain why or how, but when I have my brushes and paint, standing in front of my canvas, I’m as if “guided” by an inner creative force: I paint what sprouts within me spontaneously. Brushstrokes follow one another, colors overlap and blend according to my inspiration: the end result is just perfect, it pleases me. And I spent a moment of serenity in my studio.
For others, it doesn’t necessarily come naturally. I was never very good at art in secondary school. It’s not that I didn’t like it, but I didn’t really get into it. But today I regret it a little, because I’ve matured, I’ve got the time and above all I need this creative activity.
I feel like painting!
But I don’t know where to start… I have no idea, I have no style. In fact, I don’t even know what materials I need to paint with acrylics.
Getting started in abstract painting
I’ll motivate you to get started! Acrylic paint is an art that doesn’t necessarily require a lot of equipment. It’s a fairly simple paint to use, and it has many advantages. It dries fast: you can work layer by layer fairly quickly, without having to wait hours for it to dry! So when you’re motivated to do a painting, you can do it almost in one go! Acrylic paint can be diluted with water; the equipment can be cleaned with water: it’s easy and inexpensive!
You can also try the alla prima techniquetechnique, painting with a knife, or try your hand at making paintings in pouring paint.
Using mediums such as modeling paste, you can create innovative, raised paintings with objects (fabrics, feathers, bolts, etc.).
In short, acrylic paint offers a wide range of creative possibilities, so get started!
Lack of inspiration in painting
You’re going to tell me that’s all very well, I’m motivated! But I paint…what?
You can start by familiarizing yourself with acrylic paint. You don’t have to start with canvases right away, but you can experiment with paper.
- Learn how to mix colors;
- Tame the color wheel ;
- Find out how to make a background;
- Add a lighter stroke here, a gradient there to make the colors pop.
As you can see, to paint abstracts, you need to get started and experiment.
There’s no such thing as failure in painting! But acrylic is a magic paint: you can go back to your painting later to improve it, touch it up, add highlights or shadows!
You’ll find that as you experiment, you’ll become more at ease. And you’ll no longer be afraid of the blank canvas syndrome.
From now on, you can let your imagination run wild. Take inspiration from nature walks or a city outing. Whatever you do, don’t restrict your emotions. Let your thoughts flow through you!
💡Your feelings in different situations will be your greatest sources of inspiration! ✨
And above all, go for it 🎨!
